Tour: “The Beginnings of a New City”
By the middle of the 19th century, the Jewish population in the Old City had increased significantly and the Jewish Quarter became very crowded; its inhabitants suffered from widespread disease and housing became scarce. The great British financier and philanthropist, Sir Moses Haim Montefiore was the pioneer in development of Jewish settlement outside the walls of the Old City with the building of the Mishkenot Sha'ananim neighborhood, to be followed by other neighborhoods such as Yemin Moshe and Nahalat Shiv’a. In the twentieth century, during the British Mandate, interfaith institutions and grand hotels rose up outside the walls of the Old City. These neighborhoods and buildings have become icons of the new city as we know it today.
We will start our tour near the famous flour mill and chariot at Mishkenot Sha'ananim, enjoying a spectacular view of Valley of Hinnom, Mount Zion and the city walls. From there, we will pass through the picturesque neighborhood of Yemin Moshe and the beautiful Bloomfield Garden. We will arrive at the King David Hotel and the Jerusalem International YMCA and hear both known and untold stories of these famous buildings. At the end of the tour, we will reach Jaffa and Ben Yehuda Streets and on the way, discover interesting murals, the galleries of Nahalat Shiv’a, the hidden Andalusian square and more attractions of modern Jerusalem as time allows...
