Tour: “The Prophets Street”

Over the years, many nations, sought foothold in Jerusalem and in the past two centuries, have acquired land outside the walls of the old city as well. Today we witness their mark on buildings, institutions and homes designed in architectural styles from distant lands.  The British named the main road of this international district “Street of the Prophets”, most likely in an attempt to earn acceptance among Jewish, Muslim and Christian populations alike.
When walking through the “Street of the Prophets, some will wonder if we are really in Israel. But behind the beautiful buildings, lay stories of pilgrimage, philanthropy and the search for health of the body and soul. The streets and monuments are intertwined with the stories of Jewish settlement and a war torn city.

We will start our tour in the Notre Dame of Jerusalem and enjoy a spectacular view of the Old City and the New City. While we enjoy a bit of Paris in Jerusalem, we will learn about the battle that took place from this building during the Independence War and hear about how a nun’s dentures were recovered after falling across the armistice line. We will see the former Italian and German hospitals in their past splendor, and their new functions, and discover the connection between the Queen of Sheba’s visit to King Solomon and the revival of the Hebrew language at the end of the 19th century.
More in this tour: the Russian compound and the home and synagogue of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, one of the fathers of religious Zionism. We will also visit an art gallery which was constructed in the middle of the 19th century as a home to an affluent Arab family, later sold to a fraudulent antiquities dealership and afterwards served as a clinic for eye diseases.
